What is an A1 English test?

An A1 English language test is a type of Secure English Language Test (SELT) that is needed for a Family partner or Family parent visa.

A1 part refers to the level of English you have, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR guidelines say that someone at the A1 level in English can:

  • Understand everyday expression 
  • Introduce themselves and answer questions about their lives 
  • Communicate with others in simple phases 

What are A1 English tests used for?

A1 English tests are used to assess the level of English proficiency a person has. The level of English language ability needed for a Visa application can vary depending on the immigration route. English language test results are needed for the application process for a number of visas so to find out which level you need, it's best to check the UK Government website.

How can I prepare for an A1 English test?

The A1 GESE Grade 2 is a one-to-one speaking and listening test. If you choose to take your exam in a Trinity SELT centre it will take place on a Trinity tablet device which will be set up by your personal steward. These are delivered with Trinity examiners remotely via video conference. 

The exam is 6 minutes long and you will have a conversation with the examiner.

Your A1 English test can be completed at one of the Trinity test centres.

​​All Trinity certificates are valid for life to be used as evidence of your achievement and performance in a Trinity exam. However, where certificates are used for UK visa or immigration purposes, Trinity has recommended to the UK Home Office that, for security reasons, only certificates less than two years old should be accepted.
