We commission and use different types of research in many ways to inform what we do, who we do it for and how we do it.

We use research science and methodologies to explore, investigate, develop, test, improve, question and validate opportunities and outcomes across all parts of our business, from identifying learner needs to developing assessments that lead to qualifications.

Examples of the different types of research we undertake include:

  • Innovative research projects - eg with CASS at Lancaster University to develop Trinity Lancaster Spoken Learner Corpus from anonymous recordings of our Graded Examinations in Spoken English. Analysis of the findings is already helping us to develop new research-informed resources for teachers.
  • Impact studies - eg a longitudinal study of Arts Award’s impact led by London South Bank University
  • Technical research projects - eg a research-based project resulting in a CEFR Calibration Report on how Trinity's GESE and ISE English language qualifications map to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • Test development research - eg working with world-class research institutions such as CRELLA (Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment) as part of the process for revising and modernising our Integrated Skills in English (ISE) qualification.
  • Research journal papers - eg papers authored by our senior academics that have been published in respected journals exploring ideas and thinking about assessment theory and practice.
