UCAS points

UCAS has introduced a new Tariff for students applying for entrance to universities and colleges in the UK from September 2017. This is based on a new approach, using a qualification’s size and grades to calculate total Tariff points, with the aim of providing a fair and more transparent process of allocating points to qualifications.

The new UCAS Tariff will be used for courses starting from September 2017.

Additional information

If you wish to use an ATCL to support your application for Higher or Further Education the following document may be useful: ATCL HE and FE Guidance.

This table explains how our qualifications fit into the Qualifications and Credit Framework.

New Tariff arrangements from 2017

Regarding the new Tariff, please note the following:

  • The new UCAS Tariff points should not have any impact on student decisions about qualification choices at school or college, or their preparation for, or application to, a higher education course.
  • Students will still need to achieve the same A level, Scottish Advanced Highers, Scottish Highers, or BTEC grades (or grades in any other qualification being taken) to meet the higher education course entry requirements.
  • The number of UCAS points awarded to all qualifications has changed. This includes A levels, AS levels and Trinity qualifications. For example, an A* at A level was worth 140 points under the old UCAS Tariff, but will be worth 56 points under the new system. The AS level is now worth 40% of an A level – this is more accurate according to qualification regulators.
